This is an extraordinary variety of GPS systems in cars to choose from today. I have a brand is little more than a year and have to do with it until a week ago. During a trip to an unknown a month ago I was late for an appointment and went to my old GPS to tell me to do. I've always been good, then in general area has been around the block to be taken. And again. Then again. I came close to knocking the thing out the windowswore then and there that I wanted a decent investment.

I have a lot of research on the net and, finally, my choice was reduced to three different models, two of one of Garmin and TomTom.

The Garmin Nuvi 760 includes multi-destination routing, spoken directions with real street names and integrated traffic receivers. This model also includes an image viewer, MP3 player, world clock, currency and metric converter and aCalculator.

To be honest, I do not see the need of any extras included with this drive, I was attracted by the fame that Garmin GPS units. The important thing for me was the accuracy and performance routing engine. This may seem obvious, but is easily distracted with all the other features are placed on these devices today.

I was not disappointed with the Garmin. It 's fast and the current positionquickly calculate best route. Niggle a lesser volume could be slightly higher, there is usually no problem, but with the window down and travel at 70 mph was to hear a load. The Garmin 760 includes the route to carry out an FM transmitter to car radio, which goes to my question.

Overall I am very happy with this GPS and I think that is a good choice.

If you're a pilot you're almost certainly quite familiar with GPS systems. And it is almost equally likely that you wish the things weren't so darn difficult to figure out and that their manuals were more pilot-friendly. If you feel like this, you're not alone. It's never ceased to amaze me how some high-tech equipment, often life-saving high-tech equipment, comes with manuals of such widely varying quality and clarity. Sometimes the writing is incomprehensible, sometimes the formatting is unreadable, and sometimes the content just doesn't make the grade. The information may be all there, but the tech writers who wrote it never seem to have seen the cockpit of a plane themselves.

What's needed, really, are manuals that are written for pilots by a pilot. Pilots are used to learning and executing procedures in a very structured way, and the GPS manuals we use should consider that and provide that. I am not saying the manuals that come with the Bendix/King, Garmin, Lowrance and other popular aviation GPS units are inadequate. In fact, many are very good. It's just that very few appear specifically written for pilots by someone who knows what it actually feels like to fly a plane.

Why do I consider this so important? Well, obviously knowing how to operate your GPS and make it do what you need for it to do is quite important, and there's simply no room for frustration caused by inadequate manuals. From personal experience you probably also know that human beings, the creatures of habit that we are, often pick up the bare minimum on how to use or operate something, and then never make another effort to learn more. That may work for some, but it inevitably means you're neither taking full advantage of your equipment, nor are you likely operating it as efficiently and productively as is possible. A lot of the electronic gear we use in our lives can do a lot more than we use it for, and the reason for this under utilization is almost always due to poor or inadequate training and manuals.

So what should you be looking for in truly pilot-friendly manuals? First, it should have step-by-step, task-oriented instructions covering all common (and not-so-common) GPS operations. And those instructions should be written in good, plain, direct and easy-to-follow English. Second, in an era where almost everything is delivered electronically or on a CD/DVD, GPS manuals for pilots are still best provided in good old-fashioned printed form, with large type and bound so you can lay the manual down flat. This way you won't be out of luck if your computer won't boot, its battery is dead, or you are flying and don't even have your computer with you. This way, you won't ever find yourself in a position where you urgently need directions or help but, unfortunately, the directions or help are on a dead computer.

It really shouldn't be asking too much to expect pilot-friendly clearly written, properly structured, and helpfully illustrated manuals with all the wonderful aviation GPS technology that's available today. Manuals that are actually written for pilots by pilots. Aftermarket to the rescue, I say. A bit of poking around online actually does reveal such manuals for most of the common aviation GPS units. Finding the one you need is time well spent.

A number higher than this means that the course will play more difficult for you. A number lower than this means that the course should play easier.

Finally, and perhaps more relevant than any term, is the notion of the adjusted gross score. Many golfers implement this incorrectly and it drastically affects their golf handicap. The adjusted gross score is simply instrumental in calculating your golf handicap. It prevents a few bad holes from adversely affecting your golf handicap.

Golf Instruction - Putting Like A Tiger

I would like to share a bit of golf putting instruction that helped improve my game. I learned this morsel of putting information while watching Tiger Woods on television a few years back. The best thing about this putting technique is that you can immediately see results by just following Tiger Wood's example.

As that great baseball philosopher Yogi Berra once said, "You can observe a lot just by watching." Anyway, here is what I observed. After Tiger went through his putting ritual, he made his practice putting strokes behind the ball while facing the cup.

Since he was facing the cup, Tiger was getting a much better view of the break of his putt. Instead of addressing his putt and turning his head down the putting line, was seeing the line by better using his bicameral vision.

Also when he was making his practice putt behind the ball, he was getting a feel for the distance of the putt. I feel like the extra couple of feet that he was standing behind the ball made him a bolder putter. Of course, the cameras follow Tiger all around the golf course and I was able to really study his technique.

Sitting there in my easy chair on a lazy Sunday afternoon, I was getting some golf putting instruction from the best player in the world. I could not wait to get to the golf course after studying Tiger Wood's putting method. I had to see if this method would work for me.

Well, the results could not have been more clear or more immediate. I was able to see the line more clearly and felt more confident as I walked around to address the putt. This method has definitely helped my putting.

I feel like it would be helpful to other avid recreational golfers. I am not sure if Tiger still uses this method before he putts. If he still does, you can watch him the next time he is on television and benefit from this very helpful golf putting instruction.

I read an article named, "Shame and Fortune" today! It made my heart sad to think that we can throw away our heroes so quickly! In a world where we do not allow parents to discipline their children in public, remove all implications of a God from government and give condoms to 11 year olds without the permission of parents, why would we be so naive as to think that anyone is above reproach?

The pressures of life for some are greater than others! Money does not buy love nor peace, it only offers opportunity to prove what we carry on the inside. We must be cautious not to believe that we have a right to throw stones, until we have walked in another mans life and trials!

With great fame comes great responsibility, and even greater yet, pressures, how long a person is capable of keeping their head above the demand of being a world Icon, is dependent upon the man. When that man falls from the tower we have built under him, we need to accept our responsibility in the matter.

The only man that has made a claim to being perfect, and lived in truth in that perfection, is Jesus Christ! I shudder to think that we honestly believe that any man can come close to that perfection! How 'bout you? Want to tackle the rigors of, "Tabloid Scrutiny?"

Oh, perhaps you are not as well known as Tiger Woods, well then, perhaps the tabloids would not be as ferocious on you, but then, would your life and habits stand as long and fast as has his, before crumbling?

Do you think you would handle such idolization and power without faltering?

Woe be unto any who will judge a man, rather than feel the compassion and love for a being of creation, who has lost focus and or grip on those things that are of greatest benefit to man, Guidance, acceptance, peace, and Love!

Oh for the love of the man, may we call on our better being, that we may extend our heartfelt compassion and love toward his distressing, disillusioned, disgraceful, situation in which he finds himself!

The wires of many electrical devices, including Christmas lights, are insulated inside a plastic (PVC) coating. Some sort of stabilizer must be added to the PVC so that it will be heat resistant. PVC stabilizers commonly include metals such as lead, cadmium and tin.

The concern with these Christmas lights is that the lead will leech out of the PVC and be deposited on your hands while you are decorating. Lights containing lead that are sold in California must carry a Proposition 65 warning label, but those sold elsewhere contain no warnings. Lights manufactured in the United States are less likely to contain lead.

Do not allow your children to handle Christmas lights. Wash your hands thoroughly after handling them yourself.

You should also be aware that those Christmas lights aren't the only things to be cautious about when selecting your holiday decor. Artificial Christmas trees made of PVC also contain stabilizers.

Researchers at the Environmental Quality Institute at the University of North Carolina-Asheville have found that some PVC trees release lead dust into the air and onto the ground and presents underneath the tree. Your children can breathe the dust and contaminate their hands while touching the ground or unwrapping gifts. As we all know, lead exposure is of particular concern during childhood.

Garmin Nuvifone Preview - Sat-Nav for the Masses

Recently an increasing number of mobile phones have come with certain GPS and satellite navigation applications and functionality; HTC's Artemis range and its bundled TomTom navigator software being possibly the best-equipped. This has obviously helped in highlighting the fact that Sat-Nav is fast becoming an essential part of any high-end multimedia device. Nokia have even generated there own application for use in some of the N-series phones.

To date there hasn't been a handset that is built from the ground up for this purpose, but GPS-giants Garmin have done just that with the Nuvifone.

In a varying range of blog and mobile news websites, the Nuvifone has been touted as an iPhone competitor, which is very surprising but more feasible than appearances may have you believe.

This assumption is based around the 3.5 inch touchscreen, which as you would expect is the main method of using the phone in almost all situations. This is coupled with the simplistic yet attractive-looking interface and in some aspects you can see why it has been given the dreaded task of competing with the iPhone.

As this mobile phone hasn't been shown first hand to the industry officially, it's hard to make any kind of judgement regarding the effectiveness of the UI, but if it is as innovative as the iPhone was, things could get really interesting. We do know that it is based upon the already proven interface on Garmin's existing Nuvi Sat-Nav system.

Official specs are nigh-on-impossible to get hold of at this time, but there are some sketchy details out there at the moment. The Garmin Nuvifone will have a (as mentioned earlier) 3.5" touchscreen display; HSDPA 3G access; digital camera with video (no Mega Pixel count yet) and media player with support for all the latest music file formats such as AAC+ etc, though this is still awaiting confirmation.

The Garmin Nuvifone will have 3 separate ways in which to use the device, all of which can be selected with a single tap on the relevant on-screen option. The options are pretty self-explanatory - Phone; Search & Navigation. The search option in case you're wondering is for locating your own position when lost, via the integrated Google local search option.

The Sat-Nav capabilities are also based on Garmin's standalone Nuvi series of GPS receivers and are likely to be one of the best seen in mobile phones capable of this.

Once more specific details and specs are available we'll have a better idea of how the Garmin Nuvifone will fit into the marketplace once released, but until then methinks it'll be one to watch closely over the coming months.

How To Make Your Golf Outing Successful...

Golf outings are a great way to raise money for organizations and charities. With all the competition today, good planning is essential. A golf outing consists of three parts: Registration, the golfing itself and the award banquet. If this is your first golf outing, you should allow at least 9 months to a year for planning. It's great to have a positive attitude but golf outings require a lot of work. The less efficient your committee is, the more money you need to spend out of the profits to run the outing. Not only should you be looking for golfers and sponsors, but the more prizes and food you get donated, more profit goes to your organization.

One of the first things you want to do is form a committee. If this is your first outing, your committee should consist of 5 or 6 members. You'll want to have members who are effective and will get the work done. It is helpful if some of your committee members are golfers. For the outing that continues each year, keep in mind that all too often committees have the same members. Having the same members year after year can cause your organization to be stuck in a rut. Adding new members can bring fresh ideas and energize your committee. Don't be afraid to try new ideas. When presented with new ideas, ask yourself "why not" instead of "why".

Committee Responsibilities:

Determine the format for the outing
Set up a budget
Select a course and negotiation pricing
Set up a schedule
Create and distribute your flyers, application, sponsor letters and donation requests
Solicit for participants, donations and sponsorships
Track the progress of the event
Finalize the set up and implementation of the outing

It takes a lot of planning to create a good golfing experience. Registration will be your first contact with the golfers. Making a good first impression will require you to be well organized and ready. Have your committee members play the course beforehand. This will be a great way to evaluate the movement of the course. Talk with the course management for their input on which holes are better for the skilled games, which holes run slower than others, etc. One of the biggest complaints from golfers in outings is poor organization. Make sure your volunteers know their duties before the day of the event. Have a dry run set up to go over the procedures. You want to make sure your event starts as scheduled. With that said, there will be no time to teach volunteers their roles the day of the event. Make the day fun for golfers. If your golfers are happy, they tend to stay around for the awards banquet which in turn can generate more money for your organization. As golfers finish and return to the banquet site, have your raffles and/or Chinese auctions running. Put names on the tickets for a quicker call back of winning prizes. Be careful not to "Nickel and Dime" your guests. That could create a negative lasting impression. Once the last foursome has finished, have the luncheon or dinner ready. Start into your award ceremony as your guests are eating. Avoid having too many speakers. Everyone has been away from their families for most of the day now and the last thing they need is a prolonged ending program. A golf outing consists of three parts: Registration, the golfing itself and the award banquet. If this is your first golf outing, you should allow at least 9 months to a year for planning. It's great to have a positive attitude but golf outings require a lot of work. The less efficient your committee is, the more money you need to spend out of the profits to run the outing. Not only should you be looking for golfers and sponsors, but the more prizes and food you get donated, more profit goes to your organization.

One of the first things you want to do is form a committee. If this is your first outing, your committee should consist of 5 or 6 members. Exercise 1 :

Place feet on the ball , keep abdominals tight and ensure back is straight . Bend at the elbows and lower yourself to a few inches from the floor. Press up and repeat.

Exercise 2 :

Place knees on the ball (legs straight) , keep abdominals tight and ensure back is straight. Bend at the elbows and lower yourself to a few inches from the floor. Press up and repeat.

Exercise 3 :

Place hands on the ball , keep abdominals tight and ensure back is straight . Bend at the elbows and lower yourself to a few inches from the ball. Press up and repeat.

Exercise 4:

Place feet shoulder width apart and far enough forward to ensure knee + ankle alignment. Lower your thighs parallel to floor and push up thru heels. Ensure 90 degree angle at the knee.

Exercise 5:

Maintaining an upright position, place one foot on the ball. Bend the other knee and descend until the forward thigh is parallel to the floor. Push up and back to the starting position. Repeat with the other leg.

Exercise 6 :

Lay with ball supporting lower back , knees and heels in line. Cross arms over chest. Pull abdominals firmly in and curl up and forward, exhaling as you lift. Repeat.

Exercise 7 :

Place hands on ball, pull abdominals firmly in. Roll ball forward ensuring back does not sag. Repeat.

Exercise 8:

Find a balance point on the ball, pull abdominals in. Reach and extend 1 arm and opposite leg ensuring head is in line. Change arm/leg and repeat.

Exercise 9 :

Find a balance point on the ball. Gently extend over the ball to feel stretch in abdominals and back. If any dizziness is felt, please avoid this stretch.

Exercise 10 :

Lie on your back with your knees bent at 90 degrees. Place heels on the ball with toes pointing inward . Place your hands behind your head with the elbows out to the sides and pull your ABs tightly inward.

Curl up and forward raising your shoulders blades off the floor. Pause, squeeze your ABs and slowly return to the starting position.

I know that when I first starting learning this game it was really just an endless succession from one swing fault to the next. I'd apparently fix one, but the compensation patterns that I adopted to do so would lead to another...and another...oh friggin' brother!

I began to study this frustrating issue from a neuro-muscular (brain-muscle) standpoint. And then it all began to make sense. It was somewhat de-moralizing, but at least it made sense.

What I discovered is that our bodies and our brains put together what is called a "motor engram". This is basically a movement pattern that becomes programmed into our computer (brain).

You develop motor engrams all the time for repeated tasks. For example, most everyone can stick their car key into their ignition without one bit of thought. Your body/mind has a motor engram that knows the height and angle for the key to fit perfectly, without you thinking about it.

Get a new car, however, and you're going to miss quite a few times. At the very least you are going to have to think about it, until you establish the new motor engram.

That's exactly what happens in the golf swing. Your body/mind has a motor engram of "golf swing". And then you go and change the position of the ignition! Of course there is going to be trouble.

And here is the really sad news - science tells us that it can take up to 10,000 repetitions of a movement to UNlearn a motor pattern and RElearn a new one.

So there you have it...when an instructor or golf magazine tells you that it takes TIME and PRACTICE to change your bad habits, they have science on their side.

Fortunately for all of us, there is a better way.

The emerging field of energy psychology (EP) can quickly and easily accelerate your golf swing changes. EP can "clear" negative feelings and emotions by "tapping" on certain points on the face and body, while focusing on the feeling. What I realized is that the major problem with implementing new golf swing mechanics is that they usually felt awkward, uncomfortable, weird, etc. So EP can eliminate those feelings, by-pass your current motor engram and dramatically reduce your learning curve.

Garmin C330 - This in-car navigation system offers continuous route tracking and voice-prompted directions to lead every driver down the right path. The StreetPilot, part of the GPS "c-series" promises simple navigation through touch screen commands. This dynamic auto global positioning system calculates automatic routes to every destination and aids drivers through every twist and turn. Not only operational but also versatile, this Garmin GPS offers drivers two selections for navigation: a bird's eye view from above or a 3D navigation. This Garmin device imparts users the opportunity to see almost six million points of interest, including ATMs, restaurants, hotels, gas stations, and numerous other attractions.

Design

It is intended for simplicity, as is evidenced by the lack of function buttons on the unit. Other than a volume control, a power switch, and a USB port on the unit's right side, all user controls are accessed through the responsive touch-screen display. The only thing missing is a remote control. Measuring 4.4 by 3.2 by 2.8 inches and weighing just 9.5 ounces, the C330 is certainly portable.

The C330's 3.5-inch (diagonal) screen with backlighting is colorful, showing off 64,000 hues and 320x240-pixel resolution, and the maps display quite a bit of detail. The inbuilt speakers are loud and clear, so you won't be left completely on your own to find your way. The C330 comes with a lever-activated suction cup swivel-mounting cradle that is smoothly connected to the car's windshield in addition to an AC power adapter and a PC/USB cable for firmware and software updates. Giving the antenna a clear view of the sky, while the 12-volt car adapter is hardwired to the cradle. There's also a connector for an optional exterior antenna for better satellite reception.

Review and Performance

It took a little more than a minute to lock on to the requisite four satellites for a 3D fix. Finding POI addresses was quick and easy, and path calculations were right on the money. We never once lost a decent satellite lock throughout our travel on Eastern Long Island, New York, although the C330 gave in to the canyons of lower Manhattan, as is invariably the case due to a limited view of the sky. But, the signal loss was momentary, and reacquisition was instant. We were impressed by the accuracy of the receiver and the unit's ability to put us back on course after straying from our prescribed route. As assured, the internal battery gave us 4.2 hours of operation while on foot patrol.

Three Secrets of A Consistent Golf Stroke

What you are about to read... will change your golfing life forever! What are these three "secrets"? If you knew how would they effect your game?. These three "secrets" are what the worlds best players do. Every player MUST know these "secrets" if they are to have a powerful, repeating golf stroke.

The problem with the majority of golfers is that they don't know what to do. Oh their friends, well wishers at best, tell them that they are "bending their left arm", "raising up through the shot", "coming over the top" and host of other swing faults. But these are the same people that shoot the same scores you do! What could they possibly tell you that would improve your game?

The information you are about to receive is not theory or conjecture but science. Ooooh, you say, this sounds complicated. Well it isn't, it is simply the laws of force and motion that govern our entire lives and day to day living. Once you understand these simply laws your golf game will forever change...for the better!

Secret #1: A Flat Left Wrist

Because the golf stroke involves a golf club, a left arm, and a wrist in between, it is called a "lever system". The left wrist acts as a "hinge pin" much like the old time "flail" used to beat wheat. This "hinge pin" can rotate, cock or uncock but NEVER Bends!

Golfers however routinely bend the left wrist causing the clubhead to reach the ball before the hands do. This causes a "quitting" motion, adds loft to the clubface, points the face to the left of target, makes the clubhead swing upward disrupting the downward motion that ALL good golf shots MUST have. Good players DELOFT the clubface at Impact. Poor players ADD loft to the clubface costing them distance, direction, and trajectory.

A 5 iron, for example, has approximately 8 degrees for "forward lean" when soled properly. At Impact with good players the "lean" is approximately 15 degrees. This turns the 5 iron into a 4 iron. Poor players reach Impact with a "backward" leaning clubshaft thereby ADDING loft and turning the 5 iron into a 6-7 iron!

Secret #2: A Staright Plane Line

You only have two choices when it comes to the swing plane, you are either on or you're off. There is no middle ground!

What exactly is the swing plane? The plane is the angle of the clubshaft as it sets at address - period! It is NOT Hogans plane of glass as many would have you to believe. There are only three planes available;

1. Horizontal - a wall

2. Vertical - the floor

3. Inclined somewhere in between

As golfers you and I use the Inclined Plane to swing the club back up and end, down out and forward, up back and in making the Golf Stroke three dimensional.

The clubshaft, actually the sweetspot of the club, may travel to any other plane angle during the swing as long as it DOES NOT cross the base of the plane. Here is a simple way you can know if you are on plane or not. Whichever end of the club is nearest to the ground MUST also point at the base of the plane from horizon to horizon. If neither end is nearer then the clubshaft MUST be horizontal to the ground and parallel to the base of plane.

Secret #3: A Lagging Clubhead

Lag by definition means "trailing". When the clubhead passes the hands coming into Impact there is no "lag". Without "lag" the golf ball cannot be compressed, we cannot hit downward, and we have a tremendous power loss. Clubhead lag promotes a steady and even acceleration giving us a dependable way to control distance.

Look at any picture of your favorite player at Impact. The left arm and clubshaft are in ONE LINE! Never two lines. This means that the player is utilizing "lag". When a ball is struck with "lag" it explodes off the clubface! Without this "lag" the sound turns into one of mush, a soft Impact instead of a driving Impact.

If you follow this outline, learn these three "Secrets" you will be hitting the ball with more compression than you ever thought possible.

For example, a Driver striking a golf ball with a 2 degree "backward" leaning clubshaft at 100 mph with 9.5 degrees of loft produces a launch angle of 6.4 degrees and a carry distance of 230 yards.

By changing Impact to a 2 degree forward leaning clubshaft the player produces a launch angle of 10.4 degrees and a carry of 251 yards. A 21 YARD INCREASE WITHOUT buying a new Driver and simply having clubhead lag!

What you are about to read... will change your golfing life forever! What are these three "secrets"? If you knew how would they effect your game?. These three "secrets" are what the worlds best players do. Every player MUST know these "secrets" if they are to have a powerful, repeating golf stroke.

The problem with the majority of golfers is that they don't know what to do. Oh their friends, well wishers at best, tell them that they are "bending their left arm", "raising up through the shot", "coming over the top" and host of other swing faults. But these are the same people that shoot the same scores you do! What could they possibly tell you that would improve your game?

The information you are about to receive is not theory or conjecture but science. Ooooh, you say, this sounds complicated. Well it isn't, it is simply the laws of force and motion that govern our entire lives and day to day living. Once you understand these simply laws your golf game will forever change...for the better!

Secret #1: A Flat Left Wrist

Because the golf stroke involves a golf club, a left arm, and a wrist in between, it is called a "lever system". The left wrist acts as a "hinge pin" much like the old time "flail" used to beat wheat. This "hinge pin" can rotate, cock or uncock but NEVER Bends!

Golfers however routinely bend the left wrist causing the clubhead to reach the ball before the hands do. This causes a "quitting" motion, adds loft to the clubface, points the face to the left of target, makes the clubhead swing upward disrupting the downward motion that ALL good golf shots MUST have. Good players DELOFT the clubface at Impact. Poor players ADD loft to the clubface costing them distance, direction, and trajectory.

A 5 iron, for example, has approximately 8 degrees for "forward lean" when soled properly. At Impact with good players the "lean" is approximately 15 degrees. This turns the 5 iron into a 4 iron. Poor players reach Impact with a "backward" leaning clubshaft thereby ADDING loft and turning the 5 iron into a 6-7 iron!

Secret #2: A Staright Plane Line

How to Choose a GPS Receiver

One of the hardest decisions you will face when purchasing a GPS Receiver is finding the right GPS Unit for you. There are many different types, from Garmin to Magellan. Choosing the right one can seem like an enormous task. However, it does not have to be difficult if you know what you are looking for before you buy.

You can ask both retailers and GPS experts what the best units are. However, when choosing a GPS Receiver, your needs may differ from the needs of another, so, you should determine which unit you want to use on your own, based on exactly what your GPS specs are..

For instance, depending on what suits you best, you may wish to use a handheld GPS Unit. If you want to take your GPS everywhere you go, then a handheld GPS Unit is a great option. There are various types of handheld GPS Units on the market, so once you determine what type of GPS receiver you want you may want to examine and compare the features of each unit. Garmin makes excellent handheld GPS Units such as the Garmin Etrex Legend CX. Magellan has its own variety of handhelds as well, including the Magellan Explorist XL.

The other option you can choose from is the Portable GPS Unit. Portable Units are the ones most people use in their cars. They are convenient because the can attach to the side of the dashboard or another nearby location. Some Portable GPS Units even have places that are built in to the cars, where they can fit during the ride.

Both Magellan and Garmin make Portable GPS Units. The differences are seen in the technology and sometimes the features. Depending on what you are looking for, you may want to go with a Garmin Portable GPS Unit such as the Garmin Portable StreetPilot C320 or a Magellan Portable GPS Unit such as the Magellan Roadmate 3050T.

How GPS Works

In order to understand what kind of GPS Unit you want a brief overview of how they work is necessary. A GPS receiver uses a triangular technique to pinpoint your exact location on a map. The triangular formation uses three or four satellites at one time to send a signal to and from the GPS receiver. It does not matter whether you are using a Portable GPS Unit or a Handheld GPS Unit, you will need to be able to make contact with the satellites in order for the GPS receiver to work.

Once the satellites and the GPS receiver send signals, the distance from each of the three satellites to the receiver is computed and a location is determined. This happens quite fast, since these signals travel on radio waves. In fact, it must travel as fast as a nanosecond in order to work sufficiently and alert you as to your exact location.

The receiver is able to save information and it offers the location in a convenient, easy to use way. Often, this may mean a map is displayed or directions are listed. Other GPS Units use palm pilots or PCs to display the location information.

GPS Receivers are designed to look familiar. The maps are displayed exactly as the maps you use online to receive directions are displayed. GPS Units sometimes include speedometers, which resemble those in cars. Some look like mini computers with an operating system type of setup. This makes GPS Units both appealing and easy to use, since you can mimic these applications when using them on your GPS.

Choosing Based on Features

The first GPS receivers were attractive to a wide variety of individuals and they all had the same or similar features. Now, GPS Receivers still cater to a wide variety of people, though rather than having to deal with every single feature you may not use in one GPS Unit, the GPS Units have been divided into brands (Magellan, Garmin, tomtom, etc.), types (portable GPS Units, handheld GPS Units, GPS PDAs, etc.) and uses (driving, hiking, etc.)

You may still want a universal GPS Unit or you may want to pick out a specific GPS Unit based on why you are using your GPS. If you want a portable GPS Unit you can use for driving, you may want to consider the Garmin StreetPilot C550. If you want to use a handheld GPS Unit for hiking, you may want to consider purchasing the Magellan eXplorist 200. Russian Kettlebell Training and Girevoy Sport

I want to share and maybe clarify a few things about training with Russian Kettlebells (RKB) here in USA. Russian kettlebells can be used in fitness training as well as in the more traditional sport of Girevoy or GS. (Girevoy Sport)

You need to understand the difference between GS training and just RKB training, and there is a MAJOR difference.

Let's talk first about GS. What is GS?

GS is a very specific type of kettlebell training/direction. This is the professional sport of kettlebells, which includes two types of competition: Classic (Jerk and Snatch) and the Long Cycle (clean and jerk)

During a GS competition the athlete competes in one of the above mentioned competitions. The goal is to complete the highest number of reps in 10 minutes WITH OUT setting the kettlebells down.

The main focus of GS is to compete. (The fitness side of it is just an added benefit) GS is a very difficult sport that requires many things to be competitive. Technique, Consistency, Guts and Patience, and extreme conditioning. Sounds simple right? (Trust me it is not easy.)

There are a few steps that you need to follow and also know how to follow:

a. Technique
b. Strength
c. Conditioning
d. Goal
e. Consistency
f. Focus
g. Knowing how to train to pick out right on time.
h. Small steps

And above all else and most important is get the right coach. One with the experience of competing AND coaching for competitions. In the sport of GS it is crucial that your coach leads by example. You need a coach "Who walks the walk" and NOT just "talks the talk." I have been honored to have such a coach.

My coach Panteley Filikidi is a man I respect not only for his accomplishments with in the sport of GS as a competitor, but also for his coaching style.

Now let's talk about KB training:

A kettlebell is a very versatile tool to train with. You can do pretty much every single exercise that you can do with dumbbells plus a few new ones.

Most people train just to get some training done. This normally includes few sets of swings, some presses and some snatches or lifting very heavy kettlebells for few sets.

No structured workout and no specific goal.

Pretty much the same workout as always but with a new training tool (KB).
No correct technique involved but a HUGE possibility of injury. (Especially from lifting very heavy kettlebells.)

When people say I do weightlifting you don't know what exactly they are doing, when they say I do Olympic Weightlifting then you know exactly what they training for. It is a very specific type of training/direction.

With kettlebells it is the same thing. GS is specific direction, Kettlebells or KBs are wide variety of things.

I believe the GS approach for training is by far more advanced and useful training, then just KB training. And here is the one of the main reasons: Every exercise in GS must involve the right technique otherwise you will never see high numbers in competition.

And correct technique translates into "Safety" and longevity.

Life Lessons You Can Learn Playing Links Golf

I have spent 35 years playing golf in Ireland, and most of that time playing links golf. In particular, my home course is the Corballis links course just outside Dublin city. You probably will not have heard of it as it is not a championship course or normally targeted by the golfing tour packages.

As with many of my rounds of golf I try to focus in on the key skills needed to play a course well and by playing the Corballis links I discovered the following golf tips. If they start to sound like 'life lessons', well you are absolutely right. A good round of golf gives you plenty of time to ponder such things!

Sometimes life throws you a curve ball, so roll with it

I've lost count of the times I have visualized a shot and executed it perfectly only to watch it land in the centre of a fairway and hit some undulation that ricochets it off into the rough. Sometimes, that is just the way things go so it's best to accept it and play the next shot you're given. Don't ever put it down to bad luck. It's just the nature of how things are.

When things get turbulent its best to stay low

Many a 'parkland' golfer has suffered the fate of playing a links course on a gusty day for the first time. You may as well leave the wedges at home as all shots into the green need to be kept low (or drilled low) so the sea-breeze doesn't take it away. One grand ole timer I was teamed with one day used a putter from 50 yards off the green and got to within two strides of the hole. The only exception is if the wind is on your back in which case aim high and ride the breeze in.

Forward planning beats brute force every time

If you see an older (and presumably wiser) golfer take an iron off the tee on a long par-4 then follow their lead. Don't feel the need blast a long drive when the canny shot is to play for position so that your next shot has a better chance.

Having things tough for a while makes the good times seem even better

I still get a kick out of playing the undulating and narrow fairways of links golf, its glassy greens and being thrown about by the gusting sea breezes. And when I do play a parkland course of wide fairways, level greens and faint breezes, I find these courses easier to play with even my poor shots finding lucky lies. But don't take my word for it: Bernhard Langer used to practice at Corballis before playing the Irish Open at the prestigious Portmarnock links course so there has to be some value in being challenged to raise your game.

Best Golf Tip Ever!


The best tip of all time. "Wow, that sounds like something that is not true? Better not to look at the tip until you hear the ball fall into the hole on putts short? It could be that good? (I always thought the stupidest points to be myself. If you are still missing, you have no information on the next putt than you on which you just missed because you did not see, how stupid was that?

However, never return to the best advice ...

This move involves dropping your right elbow on the right side as the first train down. We want to bring your right elbow to your page, so feel really easily touch your shirt. This means that insist on the way to the inside of the ball, hold the wrist cock, and prevents from moving over the top, causing all those balls of banana and curses for you already with all these years.

What do you dois the infamous "slot" to fall. View Pro-swing. Seem to "drop" a hair, as the transition from backswing to downswing. The legs sit just a little ', and is a small break when the club changes direction. This pause is when you plan to "bring your elbows down, when I start the downswing. Down, not out!

Most of us "fired upon" in an attempt to hit the ball. It seems to move as the most powerful, but not far. Problem with this passage is thatbegins immediately Tense UN wrists while you throw your arms from your body. The result is over the top, outside in swing, with most of the spending power long before you get to the ball. Hiding her right elbow, you automatically get the correct swing path from inside to inside, and you get the most upright of your wrist cock until the last. As Emerald would say "BAM!"

Take time for a recession. Swing hard!, But did not progress. Sixfirst stage, a small drop of movement as the right elbow will be dragged down the right side. Now that slot "are, then you are preparing to leave his race! Keep your hands firmly and feel the impact of the power it brings. If you have a shot "slot" before the shot, you're in for a treat and a good 20 or more yards from the tee.

Not a bad tip, eh?

There's a new competitor in the Google-phone marketplace with T-Mobile which is releasing its first Google Android powered smartphone in the U.S. shortly. And to kick this launch off with a bang, T-Mobile USA has revealed that they will be the exclusive carrier of smartphone devices made by the top GPS manufacturer Garmin.

T-Mobile USA as the exclusive carrier of the Garminfone on Google Android rings familiar of AT&T's exclusive carrier-ship in the USA of Apple iPhones-a business decision on both company's parts that has been met with mixed reception at best.

Still, the T-Mobile execs obviously weighed the pros and cons and decided that exclusivity with the Garminfone was worth the risks. The inaugural Garminfone will be a 3.5-inch" touch screen device with a built-in 3 megapixel camera, with autofocus, and of course geo-tagging, which conveniently works over both 3G and Wi-Fi networks.

But what makes a Garminfone worth getting? Or more to the point, why a Garminfone? What did they think they could offer that other smartphone makers weren't offering? Well think of it like this-what Google did for search on smartphones, Garmin aims to do for GPS on smartphones.

Specifically, the built-in GPS on the Garminfone is top-notch, with onboard U.S. maps, complete driving, walking, and public transportation directions, text-to-speech capabilities, real-time traffic reports, local gas prices, local events, local movie listings, local weather.

From there, Garmin is also introducing the Voice Studio, a built-in feature that lets Garminfone users record customizable voice directions to share with contacts of their choice. And just like a good old GPS, the Garminfone will come with an automobile dashboard mount.

Neither T-Mobile USA nor Garmin have offered up a possible release date, but it will probably be out by the end of May. No word has been given yet on how much the Garminfone will cost either.

How Solid is Your Pre-Shot Routine?

Tiger's Pre-Shot Routine

There is a lot we can all learn by observing better players and who better to emulate than the World's #1? I have been studying Tiger Woods since he reached the top shelf of golf in 2000. A statistical "stalker" of sorts, I would record every televised event and then use the replay to record Tiger's SHOT BY SHOT data. My VCR has long been replaced by a DVR, but I still record every event.

During the final round of the recent PGA Championship I decided to put a stop watch to Tiger's pre-shot routine. I had done this with Phil Mickelson during his march to victory in the final round of the 2004 Masters. I found the results and comparisons interesting.

What do I mean by Pre-Shot Routine?

There are two important parts to the process that we all go through before we hit the ball. First, we decide what shot and club to hit. Then we visualize the shot. Finally, we execute the shot. This is a gross simplification of a sophisticated process but covers the basics.

Pia Nilsson and Lynn Marriott* refer to the THINK BOX, the DECISION LINE and the PLAY BOX. The Think Box is where all the pre-shot decisions are made; the Decision Line, is the line you cross when you step forward to begin your setup; and, the Play Box is where you stop the thinking process and focus on executing the shot.

I like to think of that step forward from behind the ball as moving into an Execution Chamber. Once in this chamber, one can only execute the shot visualized in a positive manner. No second thoughts or doubts are possible. When I discussed this with Pia and Lynn, they agreed in concept but were quite amused at the decidedly negative connotation of my "Execution Chamber" label.

The part of the Pre-Shot Routine that I timed for Tiger and Phil was the last segment - the time from the moment each player stepped forward from behind the ball until contact was made.

Here is the point!

I was able to time a representative sample of tee shots, approach shots, short game shots and putts for both players. Tiger and Phil have decidedly different routines for different types of shots. Their full swing routines are quicker than their routines for putting and the short game.

Full Swing

Tiger's full swing routine is between 9 and 11 seconds every time. Step forward, setup, two short waggles and WOOSH! For the same full shots, Phil's routine is slightly longer - between 14 and 17 seconds.

Putting & Short game

Interestingly, both champions had slightly longer pre-shot routines on and around the greens, but both averaged 20 seconds. Tiger's longest putting routine, 24 seconds, came on a breaking 12 foot putt for birdie on the 4th hole. This is still quick in comparison to how long Jack would loom over a must-make putt. My guess is that the slightly longer routines here are dictated by the addition of the distance or "touch" variable to the process.

What should we all take from this?

1. Develop your own pre-shot routine and divide it into the segments suggested by Pia and Lynn.

a. Think Box - Plan and visualize

b. Decision Line - You cross this when you move forward to play the shot.

c. Play Box - Just execute what you have planned.

2. Have a friend time your routine. If it exceeds 20 seconds you are not only wasting time, you are leaving too much time for doubt and confusion to creep into your Play Box.

3. Practice your routine whenever you practice. It should become an automatic part of your game and be the same every time. Relying on a solid routine is the best defense against the pressure of competition.

Fix Your Golf Swing Faults - Fast

How many hours have you spent (wasted) trying to correct a golf swing fault?

I know that when I first starting learning this game it was really just an endless succession from one swing fault to the next. I'd apparently fix one, but the compensation patterns that I adopted to do so would lead to another...and another...oh friggin' brother!

I began to study this frustrating issue from a neuro-muscular (brain-muscle) standpoint. And then it all began to make sense. It was somewhat de-moralizing, but at least it made sense.

What I discovered is that our bodies and our brains put together what is called a "motor engram". This is basically a movement pattern that becomes programmed into our computer (brain).

You develop motor engrams all the time for repeated tasks. For example, most everyone can stick their car key into their ignition without one bit of thought. Your body/mind has a motor engram that knows the height and angle for the key to fit perfect, without thinking.

Get a new car, however, and you will miss quite a few times. At least you are going to have to think about it until you establish new motor engrams.

This is exactly what is in the golf swing. Your body / mind has a motor engrams "swing". And then go to change the position of power! Of course there will be difficulties.

And here's the really sad news - Science tells us that there can be up toto unlearn to 10,000 repetitions of a movement and a model to Relearn a new engine.

So that's it ... Golf Magazine or if a teacher tells you that it takes time and practice to change your bad habits, have science on their side.

Fortunately for all of us, there is a better way.

The new field of Energy Psychology (EP) can easily accelerate the changes golf swing. PE can "clear" negative feelings and emotions by "touching" on some pointsthe face and body, while focusing on the feeling. What I realized is that the major problem with implementing new golf swing mechanics is that they usually felt awkward, uncomfortable, weird, etc. So EP can eliminate those feelings, by-pass your current motor engram and dramatically reduce your learning curve.

Instead of 10,000 repetitions, your golf swing can feel comfortable and confident in 1 minute. By getting past your imperfect motor engram, your learning curve will be drastically reduced.

When you are looking into getting home exercise equipment, resistance bands are an excellent choice for quite a few reasons. First of all, a resistance bands workout is a full workout that allows you to build muscle not only while you're lifting or pulling something, but the entire workout. How strong is your pre-shot routine?

Tiger's Pre-Shot Routine

There is a lot we can all learn by observing better players and who better to emulate than the World's #1? I have been studying Tiger Woods since he reached the top shelf of golf in 2000. A statistical "stalker" of sorts, I would record every televised event and then use the replay to record Tiger's SHOT BY SHOT data. My VCR has long been replaced by a DVR, but I still record every event.

During the final round of the recent PGA Championship I decided to put a stop watch to Tiger's pre-shot routine. I had done this with Phil Mickelson during his march to victory in the final round of the 2004 Masters. I found the results and comparisons interesting.

What do I mean by Pre-Shot Routine?

There are two important parts to the process that we all go through before we hit the ball. First, we decide what shot and club to hit. Then we visualize the shot. Finally, we execute the shot. This is a gross simplification of a sophisticated process but covers the basics.

Pia Nilsson and Lynn Marriott* refer to the THINK BOX, the DECISION LINE and the PLAY BOX. The Think Box is where all the pre-shot decisions are made; the Decision Line, is the line you cross when you step forward to begin your setup; and, the Play Box is where you stop the thinking process and focus on executing the shot.

I like to think of that step forward from behind the ball as moving into an Execution Chamber. Once in this chamber, one can only execute the shot visualized in a positive manner. No second thoughts or doubts are possible. When I discussed this with Pia and Lynn, they agreed in concept but were quite amused at the decidedly negative connotation of my "Execution Chamber" label.

The part of the Pre-Shot Routine that I timed for Tiger and Phil was the last segment - the time from the moment each player stepped forward from behind the ball until contact was made.

Here is the point!

I was a representative sample of the discounts, approach shots, short shots and putts for both time players. Tiger and Phil have very different routines for different types of shots. Your routines are faster than their full routines for the implementation and the short game.

Full Swing

Tiger's swing routine is 9-11 seconds each time. step, create two short swing Woosh! Putting the same time, routine Phil is a bit 'longer - between14:17 seconds.

Putting & Short Game

Interestingly, both slightly longer pre-shot routine Champions on and around the greens, but also an average of 20 seconds. Olympic Bar Maintenance

Lets face it whether you spent $150 or $1500 on your Olympic bar it probably represents a significant investment on your part. If you are running a gym, especially a CrossFit or Strength and Conditioning gym, bars are definitely one of the most used and abused pieces of equipment you have. Often though nobody takes the time to properly maintain the bars. Let's face it, the bar gets used and forgotten about, not to mention that often there are a variety of bar brands that are being used and typically the manufacturers do not send out information regarding the care of the bar. In fact I emailed all of our bar vendors asking them for information on how to maintain and care for their bars and one actually emailed me and said, "Here is our warranty information. Don't overload the bar, don't drop the bar." That was it! Nothing else. I have to tell you I was floored. So, the question remains, "How do we maintain and care for our Olympic bars?"

RUST

One thing that should be obvious about bars is that they are steel. Steel rusts when it gets wet. People sweat. Sweat=Wet=Bar Rust. Bar manufacturers try to combat this by putting a coating on the bars. The most common coatings (from least expensive to most expensive) are black oxide, chrome, zinc, and making bars from stainless steel. Even with these coatings you still need to maintain the bar so hear are a few tips on what you can do.

Clean the chalk out of the knurling. If you use chalk and you are the only one using the chalk then please clean the chalk off the bar. If you provide chalk at your gym then you need to clean the chalk off regularly (probably daily). Use a small stiff nylon bristle brush to go over the knurling. Remember that chalk dries sweaty palms. How does it do this? By absorbing moisture. Guess what it does while sitting on the bar. Absorbs moisture! Any humidity in the air any moisture at all and the chalk will absorb and hold it on the steel. So if you want your bars to not rust please clean off the chalk.

Wipe your bars down regularly with a light coat of WD-40 or 3 in 1 oil. Regularly depends on how often the bar is used. If this is in your house then twice a month should be sufficient. If you are in a commercial setting then once a week would be better. If your using them a lot and in a high humidity area then you might need to do it more frequently. WD-40 works well because it is a water displacer and it dries quickly. Spray it on a rag and wipe it down giving a good even coat across the whole bar. If you use 3 in 1 oil again place it on the rag and give a nice thin coating across the entire bar. Let it sit overnight and then wipe it down again. 3 in 1 will work awesome but it will leave your bars feeling a bit more greasy then WD-40.

Most bars today have been made to be fairly maintenance free. You typically do not have to oil the sleeves. Most of the sleeves have oil impregnated bearings or bushings. Some of the higher end bars do have small oil holes in the sleeves. For these bars you would drop in some 3 in 1 oil (DO NOT use WD-40 here) and let it work into the sleeve. Again do this after use and check it before using it again for any excess that may have leaked out to wipe it up.

STORAGE

Bars should not be stored with weight on them. PERIOD. If you leave weight on your bar, especially if it is racked, you are just begging for a bent bar. The are designed to withstand the weight not designed to permanently hold the weight. Strip you bars. I know you are tired after a hard workout but please catch your breath and put the plates away. Not only will this protect your bar, but if you are in a gym it will make the next person who uses the bar much happier if they don't have to strip it for you.

The bars can be stored on the rack unloaded or in a bar stand. If you can store them horizontally it is better the vertically. We highly recommend that you do not store needle bearing bars in a horizontal bar holder. Dropping the bar into the holder can cause damage to the needle bearings. Most gyms that teach the Olympic lifts (that would use a needle bearing bar) do not care about mirrors so it is very easy to make a wall rack that you can store the bars on. The Benefits and Proper Use of Rowing Machines

Rowing machines are exercise equipment that are designed to simulate the body movement of rowing a boat. The difference between rowing a boat and using a machine is that with rowing a boat your upper body gets most of the workout, where with a rowing machine your legs get most of the workout and your upper body only benefits from about 30% of the exercise.

Rowing machines give a full body workout and work both the muscles as well as your heart (cardio) in the same exercise. This is not something that can be achieved with most exercise machines. But unless you use the machine properly, you will not achieve full benefit from it, and you may actually end up with injuries.

It is important to warm up prior to beginning your workout with a rowing machine. This easy and an important step as it will help you to avoid straining your muscles and allow you work out longer. Warm up exercises should be done for a few minutes before boarding the exercise machine.

Once you are all warmed up and ready, check the resistance on the rowing machine. If you are using one of the rowing machines in a gym, this is very important, but if you are using a home rowing machine, you probably already have the resistance set where you need it.

However, it is a good habit to get into just in case one of the kids decided to use the machine the night before and did not set the resistance back where you had it. Start with a lower resistance and work your way up to more resistance, this is especially important if your goal is to lose weight.

You will need to learn how to properly grip the handles of your rowing machine. You want a firm but relaxed grip on the machine so that you are not putting too much stress on your arm muscles. Gripping the handles too tightly will cause you to use those muscles for the grip and they won't be able to benefit from the workout as much.

Carefully read the instructions that come with your home rowing machine, or watch the video if it comes with one, and make sure that you are using the proper form when using it. If you are at a gym, ask one of the trainers to make sure you are using the machine properly; they won't usually charge you for a personal training session just to answer that simple question.

Rowing machines work all of your major muscles. However, a rowing machine can put the same major muscles under undue stress if you are not using the machine properly. This stress on the muscles can have several negative effects. First, you will not get the full cardio workout that is intended with this machine if your body is focusing on repairing the stressed muscles. Second, your body does need to repair stressed muscles. You don't want to repair your muscles; you want to build them and make them stronger. Lastly, you can end up with a serious injury to your back or other major muscles if you are not using the machine properly, which will impede on your entire workout schedule, as well as other parts of your life.
